Cyclical Jumping Hares

Ceramic and wire

6” X 20” X 6”

Cyclical Jumping Hares, is a depiction of two hares leaping together in unison, yet both are breaking apart. Glints of gold show through the cracks of the off-white ceramic hares and wire skeleture looks as though it is the only thing keeping the piece together. On the edges of the hares, wire is seemingly sewn however the rabbit is hanging together by a thread. This being reminiscent of the toy stuffed animals I held close to as a child and losing connection with as an adolescent. This explores the depth of “softness” that femininity stereotypical is connected to and the connotation that softness makes one become prey. Cyclical Jumping Hares, also celebrates the gentle demeanor and quiet voices. There is power vulnerability. There not one right way to exist, only truths in how the world projects on to us and distorted perceptions of whose the predator and whose the prey.

"We can survive and thrive today if we know how to see. To see what's not there that should be. To see the opportunity, the solution, the warning signs, the quickest way out..."

Ultimately, this is an artwork that explores Change and the cycle of life and death. Death is an ever- present part of life no matter the stage of life. For me I started to understand the gravity of death and Change in my adolescence in a more complete way. Death took on less fear as I grew around the grief and learned about why the world has cycles of change. It began to be a reflective time instead of a scary untouchable subject. Life is about Change, but Change is something I have always struggled with. New environments and new people make for stressful moments for someone who has felt the need to be on high alert at all times. My mother often reminds me, to this day, to be careful, to be aware and make good decisions. Which is fair; as a feminine presenting person, there are always reminders that people are looking to “take advantage” or harm you. Unfortunately, those looking to do harm typically are people that already know you and have already built trust with.
