Inspiration and Research

"Women are depicted in a quite different way from men-- not because
the feminine is different then the masculine but because the 'ideal' spectator is always assumed to be male and the image of the woman is designed to flatter him"

John Berger, Ways of Seeing, 1972

Visual Essay

The display of images is inspired by John Burgers approach to visual essays. So, please look carefully at each image, and discover new perspective of femininity, as the images contrast and relate to one another.

"To be born a women has been to be born, within an allotted and confined space, into the keeping of men. The societal presence of women has developed as a result of their ingenuity in living under such tutelage within such a limited space... A women must continually watch herself. She is almost continually accompanied by her own image of her self."

John Berger, Ways of Seeing, 1972

...The publicity image steals her love for herself as she is, and offers it back to her for the price of the product."

John Berger, Ways of Seeing, 1972

"Capitalism survives by forcing the majority, whom it exploited, to define their own intersects as narrowly as possible"

John Berger, Ways of Seeing, 1972
